Description de Billy Mavreas: Photoshop illustration for my tumblr blog. I find some image on the net, manipulate it beyond recognition and drew a bunny body around it because it looked like a face. I see faces everywhere.

It was a revisit of bunnies. I had dropped them for a few years and i had fun getting back to it. It’s acrylic on canvas and prob. 3X2 feet.
Billy: These are two photoshop manipulations of a photo taken by friend and bookseller, Stephen Welch of SWWelch booksellers. I nabbed it off facebook where he uploads his pics, manipulated it, and sent the images to him and then put them up on my tumblr. It was the shapes and colours of the wood that inspired me, like i said, i see faces everywhere, whether human or critter.

Billy: "My bunnies started in the mid 90s as a way to cheer up a friend, i started making comics with them (the overlords of glee). They are trickster spirits. I used to say they aren’t rabbits, they are cartoons of cartoon bunnies. How meta !"

Intro
Des bunnies, ce sont des lapins en français-mais pas des lapins ordinaires. Des lapins câlins. Genre des créatures qu'on aime prendre dans ses bras et serrer fort fort fort fort, presque au point ou ça fait mal. Mais je ne suis pas certaine que "lapins câlins" traduit bien l'esprit des créatures qui habitent l'univers de Billy. Alors je préfère les appeller les bunnies de Billy.
Le "Yes Bunny" en haut à gauche est un lapin câlin imprimé en série. J'ai ce lapin en affiche sérigraphiée accrochée à mon mur. Il donne le ton à mon salon: rien de trop sérieux, mais tout avec passion. Cette image me suit depuis presque 15 ans. Mais pour être honnête, je ne suis jamais allée voir ce que Billy avait fait depuis. Jusqu'à récemment. Coup de foudre pour le travail de Billy. Je vous parle du "yes bunny" et pourquoi je l'aime. Et par la suite, je vous passe Billy, qui a été assez gentil pour répondre à mes questions par courriel. Et ce qu'il a à dire est bien plus intéressant que ce que j'ai à dire.
Alors--pourquoi j'aime le "Yes bunny?" Comme avec presque toutes les ouevres que j'aime, on y retrouve du texte. Un simple mot qui, avec le coeur serré entre les mains fébriles du "Yes bunny", en dit long sur le bonheur de la conquête de l'autre. L'image est monochrome et très graphique, tout en étant naive. Il y a à la fois simplicité et assurance des traits, et une abondance de détails. On dirait un hybride entre une BD, un graffiti, et un dessin qu'on retrouve dans un livre d'enfants. Mais les lignes sont précises, le tracé assuré, et le personnage très présent. C'est d'ailleurs ce que j'aime de Billy-ses images semblent simples. Mais elle ne sont pas simplistes. Et elles me font presque toutes sourire.
Correspondance avec Billy
Voici ce que Billy m'a raconté sur son "Yes bunny":
H: Can you tell me a bit about the YES bunny? How your adventure started with the yes bunny and why? And how people react to it. And can you tell me how you created yes bunny (technique and approach?)
B: The yesbunny is a small lino cut i made with supplies from a high school where i was teaching art class to at-risk youth. I nabbed the tile and cutter and went to town kinda improv fashion and i pulled a few lino press prints. Very few, unnumbered. Around 2000. But i’m not sure. I used it along with 5 other bunny graphics for a show of large blue print posters at a bar on the main.
Then i commisioned a screen print version of the yesbunny. It has seen a few editions, a small run t-shirt, it’s been on our business cards, ads and now our tote bag. I saw ‘our’ because the shop, monastiraki, is now a dual effort between my partner emilie o’brien and myself.
People like the bunny, some are confused about what’s happening in the picture exactly but they know it’s positive.
